Yes, I am a huge Sansa fan, and like a mama bear I will eat your face if you say mean things about her. That being said, I’m going to say this as nicely as possible because some of the bitching about Sansa’s marriage I think comes from non-book readers not understanding the full context. Putting aside the more complicated aspects of the marriage between Sansa and Tyrion (i.e. he is part of the family who killed her parents and he is marrying her for her inheritance) there is a basic, fundamental thing that non-book readers keep missing.
Tyrion is supposed to be VERY unattractive, like, kind of hard to look at for long periods of time kind of unattractive, and that is before he gets his nose cut off at the Battle of Blackwater. His nose gets cut off… he is left with an angry, red scab where his nose use to be and a scar across his face.
Forgive me for being shallow, but I think if the show were somehow able to express what this character looks like more accurately there would be less “I don’t know what her problem is, she’s just a bitch!” She’s a 13/14 year old girl being force to marry someone who she may never be attracted to. Even if we took away all the other political stuff that comes into play between Starks and Lannisters, this is a fundamental issue that doesn’t get addressed on the show because the actor who plays Tyrion is a good looking guy with a cute little scar.
I’m going to add that the same goes for people bitching about Dany rejecting Jorah and having the hots for Daairo. Dany is about the same age as Sansa in the books, and despite the fact that the actor who plays Jorah is very attractive, in the book HE IS NOT. His unattractive features are talked about extensively.
Dany isn’t attracted to Jorah, and to my knowledge, never was. Yes, given the visual image we have of Jorah from the show, I too would think she’s crazy for not locking that down.
The show really fucks up important contextual information: we have two teenage girls feeling pressured to hand over their lady parts to guys who are established as being unattractive to said girls. TV viewers who think Dany and Sansa owe their men something are expecting the girls to somehow see that their men are as handsome as we view them on the show. But that is not how it works in the books, and these men get rejected based on information that is crystal clear in those book, but not so in the show.
Of course there are a dozen reasons these girl reject these men. Emotional reasons, political reason, age-related reasons, these are all totally fair. I just wanted to vent because it seems like I read so many comments about these girls angering viewers because the girls are blind to these men’s looks. NOPE… It’s just TV fucking with your perspective.
Lastly… Ramsey… oh lord… in the book, he is hideously creepy looking. He’s not “totally hot, but a little creepy Simon from Misfits.” You are not suppose to find him attractive at any point.
The TV show is fucking with your perspective.
